Lucien Anderson
(b. 1992, Huddersfield)
Lives and works in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK

Lucien Anderson  makes works which are loosely allegorical, sitting as artefacts imbued with an incomplete narrative. The evocative forms of shelters and boats are recurring motifs, referencing his interests in the vernacular, nomadism, transience and landscape. Like props on an abandoned film-set, the objects Anderson makes see-saw between purpose and whimsy. Any potential practical application is often contradicted by an arbitrary, childlike playfulness.

Considering scale both physical and in terms of ambition, Anderson is drawn to “the endeavour”, pioneers on frontiers, quiet resilience, adaptation for survival and the cinematic.

Rejecting new material, Anderson selectively scavenges from what he has around him, accepting and embracing the inherent properties and problems of the material he uses. Through this, and the attempted honouring of traditional techniques, there is a relinquishment of ego.
